Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

About a week ago I conducted my very first pastel workshop, The Figure in Pastels. In my opinion, it was a howling success. Not only did I have fun, but I heard some of the participants say how much fun they were having. Three of these participants were artists in different media, two had never painted, and NONE had picked up soft pastels before. I was amazed at their work. (The one on the lower left is my demo from day 1. The other three are participant work.)

Since this was a workshop for beginners in pastel, I asked the participants to bring whatever pastels and paper they had. I didn’t want them to have to order expensive supplies if they were not going to pursue the medium. So I brought good paper and good pastels and laid them all out on the table for them to use.

I still work full time as a right-of-way agent for a public utility here in Texas, so putting this workshop together, doing the marketing and getting the curriculum package designed and ready took me a while. But it is done now, and I can give this workshop as many times as there are participants who want to attend. First time jitters are over with and I discovered that I really CAN do this! I also discovered that it was incredibly fun and rewarding. That is a good thing to discover early, especially when your plan is to do this in your retirement!
Upper left (below) is my demo from day 2. Lower left is one of the participants' work.

There is one more session of The Figure in Pastels scheduled at the Art Center of Corpus Christi for April 23rd and 24th. You can sign up on the Art Center’s website at www.artcentercc.org. Go to “Adult Classes” and you should find it.
